Final Reckoning

Final Reckoning

With Euro 2008 looming, people who wouldn’t usually be seen dead betting on sports outcomes (or anything else for that matter) have a flutter on who the victor will be, and who will crash at “the final” hurdle...

The most likely final it seems is between Spain and Germany, who, according to Blue Square have a 9/1 chance of squaring off against each other for the second biggest title in international football. The likes of Portugal against either France or Italy are an attractive 14/1 whilst rank outsiders are the usual suspects – with a Switzerland/Greece final on at 100/1, despite one being the reigning champion and the other being the host.

Germany find themselves as favourites for the tournament, but I think that this is unlikely. Undeniably they are strong throughout the team, but aside from Ballack they do not seem to possess any world class talent that could take them all the way. Football betting is not a science, but German efficiency can only take you so far, and as proven in the World Cup, when they came up against a truly brilliant defence they didn’t really look like penetrating.

Italy and Spain, it turns out, can’t play each other in the final, but I think that if both teams progress to the semi-final stage where they will come up against each other, the winner of that match will go onto win the tournament. The Spaniards are perennial underachievers because they struggle in the early rounds, if they get some form together and progress through the tournament, I don’t think anyone bar the Italians will beat them, and then it will be fascinating to see how the likes of Torres and Villa do against the best defence in the world.

Of course all of this could be thrown up in the air - last time round no one would have suspected that the Greeks would do what they did, and just about every bet made on the tournament will go up in smoke if they, or a team like them, produce a similar run and win the thing. Surely, though, lightning can’t strike twice.
